Clinical Hypnotherapy in Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth
A psychological approach to lasting change: for anxiety, confidence, stress, and breaking free of unwanted habits

Sometimes we know exactly what we want to change, yet find ourselves stuck: unable to quit, to quiet the anxiety, to feel confident, to break a pattern that no longer serves us. That’s because lasting change often lives below the surface, in the part of the mind that habits, fears and beliefs are rooted in.
Hypnotherapy works with that deeper level, gently and safely, to help you make the changes you’ve been struggling to make on your own.

What hypnosis help with
Hypnotherapy is a focused, deeply relaxed state in which the mind is more open to new perspectives and helpful suggestions. You remain aware and in control throughout. In my practice, it is used alongside psychosocial therapy, drawing on your own strengths and resources to support the changes you want to make. It can be helpful for:
- Stress and anxiety: learning to calm the body and mind, and to respond to pressure with more ease and confidence.
- Habit change: support for stopping smoking or vaping, nail-biting and other unwanted habits, alongside practical strategies and, where needed, medical care.
- Sleep difficulties: quietening a busy mind and building a more restful routine.
- Confidence and performance: preparing for exams, public speaking, interviews, sport or other challenging situations.
- Fears and phobias: reducing the intensity of specific fears, such as flying, needles or the dentist.
- Pain and physical symptoms: changing how pain and discomfort are experienced, including stress-related symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome.
- Preparing for medical or dental procedures: feeling calmer and more in control beforehand.
Hypnotherapy is not a quick fix, and it is not suitable for everyone. I will talk with you about whether it fits your needs, and it is always your choice.

Programme for Smoking Cessation
Stopping smoking or vaping is rarely a matter of willpower alone. Nicotine affects the body, the mind and daily habits all at once, which is why this programme addresses all three together.
It combines two equal parts: medical treatment led by your own doctor, and psychosocial therapy with me as a clinical social worker. This combination has the strongest research evidence of any approach to stopping smoking. Although it is called a programme, it is not a one-size-fits-all package.
Each person’s treatment is individualised to their level of dependence, patterns, mental health, circumstances and goals. Over four weekly sessions, we assess your needs, plan your quit date, build practical skills for managing cravings and replacing old habits, and create a personal plan for staying on track, with follow-up check-ins at one and three months.
Hypnosis is available as an optional part of the work for those who choose it. The programme is suitable for adults who smoke, vape or do both, in Walmer, Gqeberha.

How it works
How hypnosis works
At its heart, hypnosis is simply the intentional use of a natural ability you already have: the ability to deepen the connection between your mind and body. In that focused, relaxed state, you can reach inner resources you don’t usually have easy access to, and begin to address certain difficulties at their root, rather than just managing them on the surface.
It’s important to be honest about what hypnosis is and isn’t. It isn’t magic, and it isn’t a quick fix for serious or complex problems, anyone who promises that isn’t being straight with you. What it can do, is help with things like quitting smoking, easing anxiety and stress, and building confidence and self-esteem, sometimes as an approach in its own right.
Often, though, these difficulties are part of a bigger picture. Where that’s the case, hypnosis works beautifully alongside therapy, as one part of a fuller process of change rather than a stand-alone answer.
And it’s never a one-size-fits-all formula. Everything is tailored to you, to what you’re facing and to how you personally experience hypnosis, because no two people are quite the same. This is real, considered therapy in every sense of the word.
What happens in a first session?
Once you’ve made an appointment, we’ll meet at my office. The first session is usually a little longer, around 90 minutes, so there’s no rush and we have time to get to know each other and understand what’s brought you.
We’ll start by talking through the issue, how you experience it, and the context around it, because really understanding the problem is what allows us to address it well. From there, we’ll discuss a way forward together and decide, side by side, what feels right for you.
If we go ahead with hypnotherapy, we’ll use the rest of that first session to gently introduce you to it, with an initial hypnosis experience so you can see for yourself what it’s like. Afterwards, we’ll talk about how it felt, and if you’re happy to continue, we’ll arrange the sessions that follow.
There’s no pressure at any point, you set the pace, and nothing happens without your say-so.
How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, and people respond to hypnosis in their own way and at their own pace, some need a little more time to process things, others a little less. As a general guide, most people find that between three and five sessions is enough to work through a difficulty that isn’t tangled up with other, deeper issues.
Where things are more complex, we’ll talk it through together and find the best way forward for you. Either way, you’ll never be left wondering, you’ll always have a clear sense of the plan and what to expect next.
Sessions are available in person in Gqeberha, in English and Afrikaans.
Fees
Fees are discussed and agreed upfront, so you know exactly what to expect. Where your situation allows a medical aid claim, I’ll explain how that works. Payment is arranged at the time of booking.
What you need to know about hypnosis
A little reassurance about hypnosis
If the word “hypnosis” brings to mind stage shows, swinging watches, or people clucking like chickens, you’re not alone, and I’d like to put your mind at ease. Therapeutic hypnosis is nothing like the entertainment version. It’s a calm, natural, and completely safe experience, and you stay in control the whole way through.
Here are a few things worth knowing:
You won’t be asleep or unconscious. Hypnosis is actually a state of heightened focus and awareness, more like being deeply absorbed in a good book or a film than being asleep.
It’s a natural ability we all have. Far from being strange or unnatural, hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention that everyone drifts into every day. In therapy, we just use it intentionally, and gently, to help you make the changes you want.
You are always in control. I have no power over you, and no ability to control your mind. Hypnosis isn’t something done to you; it’s something we do together, and you remain fully in charge throughout.
Everyone can experience it, in their own way. Because it’s a natural ability, hypnosis is open to everyone, though people experience it differently. For some it’s a deep, profound state; for others, simply a pleasant sense of focus and calm. Both work perfectly well.
You can’t be made to do anything you don’t want to. Whatever you may have seen on a stage, you always decide what feels right for you. You won’t do, say, or reveal anything you’d rather not.
You’ll remember what matters. You don’t forget what happens in hypnosis, any more than you forget an ordinary conversation. You simply hold on to what’s important and let the rest go.
You can’t get “stuck.” It’s not possible to become trapped in hypnosis, you can return to full alertness whenever you wish.
And it’s entirely safe. Hypnosis is a state you already move in and out of naturally every day. In therapy, that natural ability is simply guided, with care and purpose, toward the change you’re hoping for.
If you have any questions or hesitations, you’re welcome to ask. Feeling comfortable and safe is the starting point for everything we do.
